Iron is an important part of haemoglobin, the pigment that makes the blood red. Haemoglobin is needed to carry oxygen around the body. Not having enough iron can leave us feeling tired, irritable and lacking in energy. Iron is also important for the proper functioning of the immune system.

Some research has also found that if children don't have enough iron at critical stages it may impair their mental development. If children are lacking in iron it also makes them lethargic, so they spend less time being curious and learning about the world around them. School age children may find it difficult to concentrate in class.

Making sure children get enough iron in their diet is vital to help them to reach their full potential.

Iron is naturally high in food such as:

  • Red meat, such as beef or lamb
  • Liver · Lentils and beans
  • Dark green vegetables such as broccoli, spinach and peas.

Haeme iron, such as that found in red meat is more easily absorbed than non-haeme iron (found in vegetables and beans).

Milk doesn't naturally contain much iron. However, some milks, such as Anchor 1+, Anchor 3+ and Anchor Family Milk are fortified with additional iron to help ensure that young children get enough for proper growth and development.

What else can I do to improve iron status?

Vitamin C helps the body to absorb iron properly. Vitamin C is found in fruits and vegetables and is particularly high in citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons. Having a source of vitamin C at the same time as you have iron-rich foods can help the body to absorb the iron more effectively.

Some food components, such as the tannins in tea, can bind iron and prevent the body from absorbing it. It is better to limit tea at mealtimes to help you to absorb as much iron as possible from your food.

How much iron do children need?

The amount of iron a child needs depends on their age, gender and stage of growth. Recommended daily iron intakes for children are:

Age Iron Requirement (µg)
1-3 years 7
4-8 years 10
9-13 years 8
Girls 14-18 years 15
Boys 14-18 years 11
